| Surge suppression should be installed in three levels in order to achieve maximum protection. The first level begins at the in coming utility service. At this level, the C rated suppressor is designed to shunt catastrophic fault current commonly resulting from lightning strikes on a power line. The surge arrestor is designed to direct the fault current to ground in a time adequately fast enough to divert damage from occurring on the electrical equipment. Surge protection is rated in joules, clamping voltage, and response time. The units are sold in different qualities.
