This type of surge protection is the third step in maximum protection. This is usually the level most familiar to customers. Like the other two levels of protection, the class A rated are also evaluated in joules, clamping voltage, and response time. There are a number of these products on the market of various qualities. This level is designed to protect electrical equipment from smaller surges and spikes. Most units at the A level will exclude direct lightning as a covered incident in the manufacturers warranties.
The best advice with surge protection is to select the dollar value of protection based on the value of the equipment your attempting to protect. Look for the highest joule rating, lowest clampling voltage, and fastest response time you can afford.
